The Wine Advocate

A blend of 41% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 12% Petit Verdot, with the balance Malbec and Petite Sirah. Opaque purple-colored, it displays a captivating nose of balsam wood, spice box, incense, blackcurrant, and blackberry. On the palate it exhibits complexity and elegance, layered fruit, and a smooth texture. It will evolve for 6-8 years and offer a drinking window extending to 2020.

A taut, tense fight between the acids and sugars highlight this excellent dessert wine. A strong streak of spicy grain runs straight through the compact citrus and honey fruit flavors. The sweetness is neither cloying nor syrupy—rather, it neatly laces the wine together. Cellar Selection.

An interesting blend, which includes 14% Petit Verdot and 7% Malbec. High acids and polished tannins set up a muscular, spicy wine with a beautiful mix of cassis, sweet plum and green olive flavors. The wine needs a good hour or more to breathe into life.

October 2009;  The Wine Advocate
88 points Dark ruby-colored with a perfume of cedar, spice box, violets, blackcurrant, and blackberry. Medium- to full-bodied and smooth textured, this restrained effort has solid flavors, good balance, and a medium-long finish. Drink it through 2018.

90 pointsA substantial wine with an excellent bouquet of toast, cinnamon, allspice, violets, cassis, and black cherry. Ripe and round on the palate, it has ample savory, layered fruit, plenty of spice, and excellent balance. It will evolve for 1-2 years and drink well through 2018.

STAR SELECTION, The Milbrandt family has grown grapes in eastern Washington state since 1997. This year saw the first release of its own wines; among the new bottling is this bright, citrusy Pinot Gris.

Anthony Dias Blue; 88 Points; Value and by-the-glass recommendations. Creamy and ripe with lush melon and peach fruit; smooth, long and rich.

“Best Buy” Milbrandt Vineyards 2006 Traditions Riesling, Washington “Elegantly captures the floral and mineral qualities that make the grape so exceptional. Exotic and delightful.” (12/1/07)

June 2008;  Paul Pacult for Sky Magazine
This engagingly fragrant (jasmine, orange blossom) and succulently tasty (apricot, guava, kiwi) 100% riesling hails from two vineyards in eastern Washington State, Evergreen and Preston. Don't get me started on how well this spicy white goes with Asian-inspired dishes such as sauteed pork in black bean sauce. Oh, yeah. Three stars.

Issue 123;  Restaurant Wine
5 Stars (out of 5); Exceptional: fragrant and very distinct; an off dry, medium bodied Riesling, with fine character (peach, jasmine, honeysuckle, lime), crisp acidity, and a persistent finish. Great Value.

“Editors’ Choice” Milbrandt Vineyards 2005 Legacy Cabernet Sauvignon, Washington “This is really solidly made and appealing wine...” (12/31/07)

June 27, 2008;  Lynne Char Bennett for The San Francisco Chronicle
TWO AND A HALF STARS; Proprietor-winegrowers Jerry and Butch Milbrandt and winemaker Gordon Hill make this wine from mostly Wahluke Slope fruit. This region has a moderately warm climate that translates to a riper style, showing blackberry jam, cassis, almost fudge-like chocolate notes and mint. A lifted, broad structure and refined finish outperform for the price.

June 26, 2008;  Dan Berger's Vintage Experiences
EXCEPTIONAL; Trace of mint and classic herb/cassis/black fruit aroma. Very concentrated flavors, but excellent acid balance to keep it in harmony.

Volume 32, Issue 6/April 2008;  Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine
88; 5% Petit Verdot. Rich suggestions of dark coffee and hints of vanilla combine with the solid, currant fruit of Cabernet first in the nose and then again in the flavors of this nicely composed, if slightly backward, young wine. Firmly built and moderately tannic, it is a bit rough but fairly long-lasting at the finish. It has the look of a wine that will develop for years, and a half-dozen should pass before pulling its cork.

October 2009;  The Wine Advocate
90+ points; This contains a dollop of Mourvedre. Purple-colored, the nose offers up pepper, underbrush, lavender, smoked meat and blueberry. Large-scaled, mouth-filling, and round, the wine has plenty of ripe tannin, excellent balance, and a lengthy finish. It will drink well throughout 2020.
